About

Dr Jedrzej Niklas

Bio

Hi, I’m Jędrzej! My work sits at the intersection of technology, public institutions, and environmental governance. Since 2011, I’ve been exploring how digital systems like AI and big data are reshaping state power and public values, particularly in areas like public sector and digital rights. My research brings together critical data studies, socio-legal analysis, and public governance, with the aim of understanding and influencing how technology intersects with political processes and social justice.

Academic Work

I’m finishing my Marie Curie/PASIFIC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Polish Academy of Sciences and starting my new role as a Senior Teaching Associate at the University of Cambridge. My latest project, DATAFORESTS, explores how AI and data technologies are transforming public forest governance in Poland. Prior to this, I was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the London School of Economics (LSE) and a Research Associate at the Data Justice Lab, Cardiff University, where I worked on projects examining the societal impact of AI and data systems. I earned my PhD in law from the University of Warsaw in 2017, focusing on the international human rights systems. My work has contributed to key debates on algorithmic accountability, EU AI policy, and environmental data governance, with publications in journals like Information Communication and Society and Internet Policy Review.

Practitioner work

Beyond academia, I’ve been actively engaged in policy work. From my early advocacy at the Panoptykon Foundation, focusing on digital rights in the EU, to my current advisory roles with civil society organizations, I’m committed to bridging theory with practice. My experience includes collaborating with NGOs and public institutions on issues such as algorithmic discrimination, environmental monitoring, and AI governance, helping shape policy and regulatory discussions.
